The PGA Tour heads to Ponte Vedra, Florida this weekend for THE PLAYERS Championship at Sawgrass. The Pete Dye course — most famous for it’s 17th hole island green (pictured above) — always plays challenging and never disappoints. With current forecasts in the high 70s to mid 80s and sunny, it should be a great weekend to catch some great golf at Sawgrass. Let’s take a look at 5 golfers to keep an eye on this weekend.
Jim Furyk is a local resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL., and with no question will be one of the favorites in the field. Furyk has only missed 2 of the last 16 cuts at TPC Sawgrass, and he has posted eight top 25 finishes in those 16 events. What will give Jim Furyk the advantage this weekend is his ability to hit fairway and get the ball close to the pin on approach shots. He ranks 5th on the PGA Tour in fairways hit and 1st in proximity to the pin.
Adam Scott is coming off an impressive win at The Masters. Adam Scott really does look poised to make a great run this season. This will be his first tournament back since his win at The Masters. Scott has had success at this tournament before winning in 2004 and posting 3 top 15s. Scott has not played enough rounds to be posted in the official ranking, but if he were he would be 4th in scrambling this season. And with the possibility for changing weather conditions scrambling could become very important.
Phil Mickelson has been looking much stronger as the year moves on. Mickelson held the 36 and 54 hole lead last week at Quail Hollow. And settled for a solo third after shooting a 73 in the final round Sunday. Phil has had success at The Players Championship with one win in 2007 and 6 top 25s. If he can keep putting like he did last week we may see Mickelson holding a trophy on Sunday.
Lee Westwood has been climbing the leaderboard in his last 3 tournaments. He finished T10 at Houston, T8 at The Masters, and T4 at Wells Fargo. If this trend continues we could easily see Westwood in 2nd or winning The Players Championship. He is T10 in driving this year and has posted 3 top sixes in just 10 appearances at TPC Sawgrass.
Tiger Woods is always some one to watch when he is in any field. Tiger has been having a great 2013 campaign already posting 3 wins. And in true Tiger fashion he is leading in all the stats that make a great champion: strokes gained-putting, adjusted scoring, par breakers, par-3 scoring (T1) and par-5 scoring.
This may not be a major, but we all know the players treat it as one. And what a field we will have this weekend. Even if you are not a golf fan I would suggest tuning in on Sunday to see what is going on. The PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass never fails to bring fireworks.
