John’s Byrne’ing hot picks
Each week in this segment, John Byrnes will be giving us his weekly NFL picks against the spread. Picks will be posted either Wednesdays or Thursdays. The format may evolve week to week, and we will keep a running tally on prior weeks as well as totals…..that way we can either make fun of Mr. Byrnes for being terrible, or in the event he is actually good, take his advice.
Whether or not John will be giving us a Stone Cold Lock of the Century….of the Week or not remains to be seen.
So check back with us weekly to stay up to date with John’s Byrne’ing Hot Picks!
Here are week 1’s picks:
Cowboys @ Giants (-4)
Look for the crowd to be electric welcoming home the Super Bowl champs in this prime-time game.
Colts @ Bears (-9.5)
Andrew Luck will most likely not put up Cam Newton numbers, but will keep them from being blown out.
Eagles @ Browns (+8.5)
With Brandon Weeden only going 9-20 (2 fumbles 3 sacks) in week 3 of the preseason’s 17 point loss against the Vick-less Eagles, I do not see the outcome getting any better.
Bills @ Jets (-3)
Both Fitzpatrick and Sanchez have a lot to prove this year. Rex Ryan needs to respond to his lackluster preseason (0 TDs through 3 games) or the fans will soon turn on him.
Redskins @ Saints (-7)
Without Sean Payton and Jonathan Vilma the Saints still look sharp. The Redskins secondary is the second weakest position besides offensive line. Drew Brees throws for 350+ and RGIII won’t be able to find his rhythm.
Patriots @ Titans (+5.5)
Jaguars @ Vikings (-4)
Jaguars look horrible. Adrian Peterson plays an inspiring game after not getting any carries this preseason.
Dolphins @ Texans (-12.5)
We’ve all watched hard knocks and know how bad the Dolphins are. The Texans are a perennially great defense going against a rookie QB who in his first preseason start went 11-27. This starts the beginning of a very long year for Ryan Tannehill.
Rams @ Lions (-7)
Megatron and Matty Staff start the year just like last, but my sleeper team of the year keeps within striking distance. Lions win but Rams cover.
Falcons @ Chiefs (+3)
Chiefs explosive playmakers keep them in the game at home but the Falcons win it in a close one.
49ers @ Packers (-5)
Frank Gore is looking a little sluggish this preseason. If I were putting money on it I would take the under 45 points because the two defenses are both top 5. Since I’m picking the spread, I can’t go against Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau.
Panthers @ Bucs (+2.5)
Cam reassures fantasy owners why they picked him top 10 while Tampa Bay starts what will be a long season for them.
Seahawks @ Cardinals (+3)
The QB situation in both camps has been a hot topic in the preseason. Russell Wilson has shown moments of brilliance while Kolb and Skelton have shown everything but. Still, take the experienced QBs and Larry Fitzgerald over the 3rd round rookie.
Steelers @ Broncos (-1.5)
Steelers avenge their overtime divisional playoff loss last year against the Tebow lead Broncos. We find out early if Peyton’s neck is fused back together against the relentless Steelers D.
Bengals @ Ravens (-6)
The Bengals are leaps and bounds ahead of where they were two years ago but this will prove to be Flacco’s best offensive season yet.
Chargers @ Raiders (+1)
The Chargers added more weapons to try and get Phillip Rivers and Norv Turner over the hump but the Raiders are just too fast. This game will be a shootout and I’m taking the
