Joe Mena attends Redskins games with his buddy who is a season ticket holder and brings him along for a majority of the games. The two can be seen in the above screen shot appearing on the jumbo tron at Sunday’s Redskins game. Joe has the black wig on, and his friend is decked out in his burgundy anime hair.
When he gets into his Sunday character, he is no longer Joe Mena and becomes Yellow Canoe — his Indian name. (at the moment, his friend is still waiting to hear back from the spirits for his Sunday name).
After Sunday’s thrilling victory over the Ravens on an overtime field goal by Kai Forbath, Yellow Canoe and nameless warrior made their way to their post game ritual of cheering and congratulating the players (they have Dream Seats near the west end zone tunnel). This game though, something different happened as one Redskins player was passing through the tunnel.
In the words of Yellow Canoe:
The players were throwing their gloves into the stands, and shaking hands, and all smiles, it was a great atmosphere. All the little kids get the gloves and autographs, so I usually just stand there and clap and tell them great job. Most of the team had left the field and the frenzy at the tunnel had died down, when I see DeAngelo Hall walking towards the tunnel. I just give him a standing ovation and tell him what a great game he had. He simply looked up at me and tossed me his helmet. As a former OT I am just glad I caught it. I was more than a little shocked. As someone who has been going to NFL games since 1995, and as a former season ticket holder (in another city), I have never seen a player do this. I’m sure I stood there dumbfounded for a moment, when my buddy went crazy, and snapped me out it.
After the initial shock subsided, he decided to give the helmet away. He gave it to his buddy who has the season tickets and makes experiences like this happen. He said giving the helmet to his friend was the right thing to do.
So now nameless warrior has a new helmet and hopefully a new Sunday Name soon (still waiting to hear back from the spirits remember).
And both guys have an experience they will never forget.
Appearing on the jumbo tron, being handed D Hall’s helmet, AND a Redskins victory over the Ravens…..that is one hell of a Sunday Funday.
