The Redskins’ Robert Griffin III and the Ravens’ Joe Flacco collect some hardware

It is a great time to be a DMV sports fan. The Nationals and Orioles are both pushing toward the playoffs, the Capitals are still competitive, and the Wizards….well at least the Kings haven’t moved to Virginia Beach — yet. Both the Redskins and the Ravens looked great on opening NFL week, and their quarterbacks both played outstanding.

Both Robert Griffin III and Joe Flacco are being rewarded for their performances by being named the NFC and AFC players of the week.

Griffin went 19-26 for 320 passing yard with no interceptions. He also rushed for 42 yards leading the Redskins to a major upset of the Saints (and dominating fantasy leagues as well). It is a well deserved award, and hopefully it is not the last of them.

Joe Flacco posted similar numbers to those of RGIII, going 21-29 for 299 yards and no interceptions. He led a more uptempo no huddle offense that relied much more heavily on the quarterback than previous Baltimore offenses that feature the run game more. Another well deserved honor for Flacco.

Whether you are a fan of the Ravens or the Redskins, it certainly is a great time to be a DMV sports fan. If the Skins and Ravens can build off of what they were able to accomplish in week 1, the whole region will be buzzing with success.
