Trevor Ariza Fake Game Winner

Trailing by one point and in bounding the ball with 12.3 seconds Tuesday night, the Washington Wizards had a chance to complete a comeback and hit a game winner against the Pistons. Unfortunately for Wizards fans, Bradley Beal ended up losing control of the ball which was eventually tipped over to Trevor Ariza, who threw up an air ball at the buzzer. Watching it on TV, it certainly looked like the basket was good, and even more unfortunate for Wizards play-by-play announcer Steve Buckhantz, it must have looked good in the Verizon Center as well.

Listen in as Buckhantz calls his signature “DAGGER” for what appeared to be the game winning shot:

It took them about 15 to 20 seconds before they finally realized that Ariza did not make the game winner. After watching the lack of celebration from the Wizards and finally seeing the replay, Buckhantz had to retract his dagger.

Just another “So Wizards” moment in a season that has been full of them.

In fairness to Buckhantz and color commentator Phil Chenier — as pointed out by many people on Twitter — the broadcast group has been moved from sitting on the floor this season to a few rows back in the Verizon Center, so their view might not be as good as it once was.

Either way, this one is sure to be replayed over and over.
