Sources say the Washington Wizards are close to signing free agent forward Al Harrington. The possible stretch four has had to deal with injuries the past several years but when he’s healthy he has always been a solid player in the NBA. The Wizards have been searching for a stretch four candidate through free agency, the draft and through trade all off-season, but have yet to find one. Al Harrington could be the answer to the Wizards prayers in this department. According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, Harrington will be in DC on Tuesday for a physical:
According to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, veteran free agent big man Al Harrington will arrive in Washington on Tuesday for a physical and is “close” to signing a one-year deal for veterans minimum of $1.4 million with the Wizards.
There are other teams looking to sign Harrington as well but the Wizards have been the team that is most actively pursuing him. Harrington, a former first-round pick of the Indiana Pacers has always been a versatile forward with great range for a man his size. His career averages of 13.7 points a game, 44.5 field goal % and more importantly 35.2% from the 3 pt line are exactly the kind of scoring and outside shooting the Wizards need at the power forward position.
Sources told ESPN.com that the Wizards, who have one guaranteed roster spot open, are looking to add some front court scoring punch and have aggressively pursued Harrington since he cleared waivers Aug. 4.
With knee surgery getting in the way, Harrington only managed to play just 10 games last season. Currently, Harrington has gotten back in basketball shape and is near 100 percent and says he has something to prove in his career for first time in years. Last year a torn meniscus and staph infection slowed him down, but his desire to prove he can still be a reliable NBA player is at an all time high.
Hopefully his return comes to the Wizards and he can work himself into a reliable contributor to the Wizards regular rotation.
We should hear more later on whether the Wizards and big Al are able to get a deal done, but if things go smoothly today, it sounds like Harrington could be wearing the Red/White/Blue in the Nation’s Capital this upcoming season.
