Kansas PF Thomas Robinson will return to his home town of Washington, D.C. today to take part in a pre-draft workout with the Wizards.

Robinson is one of a few players who will be on the Washington’s radar at the number 3 pick.  He is slated to go anywhere from as high as number two overall to Charlotte, or fall as far as number five to Sacramento.

Pre-draft measurements are nothing to sneeze at, and Robinson’s height may be a concern for some teams.  At 6′ 8.75″ in shoes, he would be undersized as an NBA PF.  However, he may make up for that with his toughness and wingspan, which measured in at 7′ 3.25″.

Here are some of his numbers from the Draft Combine:

  • Height no Shoes — 6′ 7.75″
  • Height w/shoes — 6′ 8.75″
  • Weight — 244
  • Wingspan — 7′ 3.25″
  • Reach — 8′ 10″
  • Body Fat — 5.0
  • Max Vert — 35.5

If the Wizards are to select Thomas Robinson, he would be an immediate upgrade in talent.  Although he appears undersized for the power forward position, his toughness and length should allow him to continue to be a very effective player at the NBA level.  He was one of the best rebounders in the NCAA last year, averaging 11.9 total board per game, and rebounding is generally one of the skills that transitions best to the NBA.  You can’t teach effort and a knack for going after the ball.

Whether or not Robinson will be the best fit on the Wizards is the real question.  Washington is suddenly loaded with young, talented big men including Kevin Seraphin, Trevor Booker, Jan Vesely, Chris Singleton, and the recently added Nene.  Thomas would still be an upgrade in the big man department, and his rebounding would be a welcomed addition.  Pairing him along side Nene could do wonders for Washington’s front court.

If GM Ernie Grunfeld decides to take the local product with the number 3 overall pick, you can’t really fault him.  They will get a guy with a great basketball IQ who will bring his tough nosed way of playing basketball back to the nation’s capital.

On top of all that, Thomas Robinson actually wants to play for the Washington Wizards.  That is quite a rare trait in basketball players.
