We all know that 2013 will be an extremely important season for Washington Redskins outside linebacker Brian Orakpo. Two pectoral injuries with in 9 months ended his 2012 season only two games in. He is going to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2013 season. Brian made some bold statements in an interview with Jim Corbett. Orakpo should be coming into training camp fully healthy, and as you can tell, he has set some lofty goals for this 2013 campaign.
Orakpo said he thinks he and his teammate Robert Griffin III will share Comeback Player of the Year. The award has only been given to multiple players three times in NFL History, so it seems like a long shot.
Rak also had a bold prediction that he would win Defensive Player of the Year. I praise Orakpo for being confident but I wonder if either award is obtainable for a player who’s been good but never great for 3 seasons and then missed his fourth season due to injury.
I am one of Orakpo’s greatest fans and I seem like one of the few in Redskins Nation who believe he can get back to double digit sacks this season. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have high goals, but are they realistically obtainable?
For Orakpo to win Comeback Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year he’s going to have to be even better than just the best defensive player in the NFL. He will have to be seen as having a Robert Griffin III type impact for this team. He’ll basically have to come close to outshining Griffin and let’s be honest here, that isn’t happening.
The fan is me is happy and excited that Brian is confident in his play this season and has set high expectations for himself, but I think DPOY talk is a bit premature for Orakpo. I think Orakpo can get back to double digit sacks this season, but I’m not sold he can get 15+ which is what he’d have to do in order to be in the running for Defensive Player of the Year.
